Our Differences

You are different than I am, or should I say that I am different than you are.    This is the one thing that we are so far from seeing and accepting, everyone’s differences.

Sure, we have gotten better at showing off our own individuality by coloring our hair, sporting more tattoos and wearing different styles.  But what I’m talking about is much deeper than that.

We can start out with differences of opinions.  Sometimes I just sit back and watch people and it amazes me that sometimes people want other people to give up their opinions and join theirs.  Really, how absurd.  We are all entitled to our own opinion, that doesn’t mean that one person is right and another is wrong.  We are all born different; different eyes to see, different ears to hear and the ability to process things differently with our brains.

The sad part of this is that relationships have ended due to a lack of understanding that one’s own opinion does not rule the world.  How many people do not talk to each other due to the fact that they could not see eye to eye?  Guess what?  We’re not supposed to see eye to eye.  We’re thrown into this thing called life and we have today and the future to think about.  With all that life entails we’re supposed to figure it all out together!  It takes much more than one person’s ideas for the world to go around.  Only through love, compassion and a deeper understanding of each other can our differences bond us together.

Our differences change with our maturity level as well as social and economic situations.  I say do not draw a line that separates, but remove it.  I say because you live over there, does not mean that you and I are not the same in some ways.  We have many brothers and sisters around the globe, every person is special.  Everyone has a light that glows within them, do all that you can to make it shine brightly.

How do we end world poverty?  This is where we all put our heads together to come up with a solution; everyone will have their own opinion of how to do this.  It will take more than one measure of action and the input of many to accomplish this.  I assure you there will many differences of opinions on this subject matter, but all would be working together to solve a devastating problem.  A person who has gone hungry might work more diligently to find a way to end it than a person who has never experienced it.  Yes, there is a difference between them, but it is time to all work together.

There are differences between you and I.  You do not see what I see.  You do not hear what I hear.  You do not speak my language.  We read and write differently.  You think so different than I.   The differences between you and I is not something that separates us, but joins us at the heart.

We all have differences from one another.  The key is to not point them out or speak of them in a bad way.  Embrace the differences between us.  Acknowledge those differences and see them with an open and accepting heart and mind.  You do not do things the same way as I, you’re not supposed to.  We were made different and I accept that.

The day we can accept one another is the day we being to learn from one another and love one another.  Until that day, strive to see the differences in others in a loving way.

Beautiful article. I tell my religious ed class (who are very competitive), it's not about being the best, strive to improve your talents to set a higher standard. But, look around at others talents to see the value in collaborating and appreciating each others differences...that's progress.
